The San Diego Padres are, together with the New York teams and the St. Louis Cardinals, one of the most disappointing teams of the 2023 MLB season.

They beat the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers in last season’s playoffs, reaching the NL Championship Series in the process.

This year, they couldn’t even make the playoffs.

Yes, MLB is more competitive.

And yes, the Padres won their last five and 20 of their last 27, with a +104 run differential.

But failing to make the postseason was something that will haunt them for a long time.

Owner Peter Seidler released a statement saying that the team fell short of their goal and that the current leadership team has his full support as the organization directs its efforts to finding impact pieces to make sure they play championship-caliber baseball.

Fans, as you can expect, had all kinds of reactions to the statement.

Most of them celebrated the fact that there will be no reactionary firings, promoting stability.

It’s all part of the game. it’s not how hard you fall it’s how you get back up

Others (mostly fans from other teams) are already implying that San Diego will try to move Juan Soto, which is highly unlikely.

Soto is a Met

In reality, the team was not far from making a miraculous comeback.

The Padres were also fairly unlucky, with that run differential ranking among the best.

Still, they couldn’t win close games and were awful in extras.

Those wins ended up costing them the season.

While some fans are mad and disappointed, most of them believe in Seidler, president of baseball operations AJ Preller, and the Padres’ baseball people.

Failed season

San Diego has a nice foundation in place to think about contention in 2024.
