Just when the news broke that the New England Patriots reportedly offered Mac Jones to the Las Vegas Raiders, the team from Sin City announced the signing of a former Pats QB.

Josh McDaniels will be reunited with veteran backup Brian Hoyer, as the franchise announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Of course, that prompted some interesting reactions on social media:

Mans gonna be 40 when his contract ends. Never did I think Brian Hoyer would be playing that long.

Hoyer should just walk in and take over the coaching responsibilities. McDaniels aint it

Hoyer is fresh off playing as the backup QB in New England for the past three seasons, finishing his third stint with the team after entering the league as an undrafted free agent all the way back in 2009.

The veteran journeyman will enter his 15th season in the league after already making starts for seven organizations, such as the New England Patriots, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Indianapolis Colts.

He’s completed 902 of 1,158 passes for 10,668 yards, 53 touchdowns, and 15 picks with a passer rating of 82.9 in 76 career games (40) starts.

Given Jimmy Garoppolo’s recent history of injuries, this is definitely a smart pickup by Josh McDaniels.

Hoyer has been a starter in this league — albeit briefly — but one could do a lot worse in terms of a proven backup.

Garoppolo is expected to have a bounce-back year after another season was cut short due to an injury.

He knows McDaniels from their days together in New England and was reportedly the Raiders’ Plan B after parting ways with Derek Carr and watching the New York Jets winning the race for Aaron Rodgers.

Still, the Raiders will have a tough time keeping up in that stacked division, regardless of who’s under center.
