The Cleveland Browns, and the National Football League as a whole, lost one of their own.

Ben Gay, who spent one season in Cleveland, was apparently killed in a crash car in Colorado.

Tom Withers of the Associated Press broke the news, but the accident took place on July 29.

Following an impressive career in high school, Gay was a star running back at Garden Community College in Kansas.

He had initially committed to play for the Baylor Bears, but he was eventually removed from the program.

Then, he pursued a career as a pro in the Canadian Football League, making an appearance in the preseason before the Browns took notice of him and signed him.

Gay appeared in all 16 games for the Browns during the 2001 campaign, helping the team get a 7-9 record and third place in the AFC North Division.

His numbers, however, were modest, logging just 172 rushing yards on 51 carries to go along with one rushing touchdown.

The Browns then waived Gay in the next offseason, and while he got a chance to join the Indianapolis Colts, he couldn’t make the 53-man roster, putting an early end to his days in the National Football League.

Per reports, the former running back is survived by his wife and three children.
