Heading into the 2023 NFL playoffs, the Dallas Cowboys looked like legitimate Super Bowl contenders, as they had secured the second seed in the NFC and appeared to be one of the best all-around squads in the league with a real shot at winning it all.

With the Cowboys set to take on Jordan Love and the upstart Green Bay Packers in the wild-card round, the consensus was that Dak Prescott and company would cruise to victory and then embrace a tough challenge from the San Francisco 49ers.

Unfortunately for Dallas, the Packers dominated the Cowboys on their home field, resulting in one of the biggest upsets of the playoffs, and the season for America’s Team ending much sooner than anticipated.

In the aftermath of that devastating loss, the Cowboys and longtime owner Jerry Jones were expected to be aggressive with roster moves during the offseason, but that didn’t turn out to be the case, and now they haven’t even secured the futures of their top current players, like Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons.

Former NFL executive Mike Lombardi said he believes the loss to the Packers may have rubbed Jones the wrong way and that’s why he hasn’t signed any of his stars to a lucrative long-term extension.

“That’s the kind of loss that stings,” Lombardi said on “The Jim Rome Show.” “That’s kind of like the bad flu that won’t go away, and I think Jerry has bad flu, and I don’t think he wants to pass out money to a team that he’s not sure is headed in the right direction.”

With the start of the 2024 regular season right around the corner, the Cowboys seem to be a mess in terms of off-the-field distractions, which could prove costly if things aren’t straightened out in a hurry.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Cowboys do sign Lamb to an extension before Week 1 or let it draw out even longer, creating a hostile environment in Dallas moving forward.
