For a player in any sport to have their number retired by a former team is the highest compliment they could receive from the organization.

That decision normally comes substantially after their playing days are over, and it is unusual to see someone lobby for that honor to be bestowed on them.

But that’s apparently the case with Mike Bibby and the Sacramento Kings.

Bibby was a college superstar who led Arizona to an NCAA title as a freshman in 1997.

He then played professionally for Vancouver after being selected second overall the following year and had stints in Sacramento, Atlanta, Washington, Miami and New York.

Bibby told the OGs Show that he wants the Kings to retire his number.

Does he deserve it?

Is this likely?

Bibby spent seven seasons toiling for the Kings from 2001 to 2008.

He averaged 17.6 points per game during this time, with 5.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds.

While certainly respectable, these are not stats that lend themselves to Hall of Fame consideration or a jersey being retired.

A closer look at his Sacramento record shows the considerable success he enjoyed while with the Kings.

Bibby’s first season with the club saw him dynamically paired with Chris Webber, and the team raced to a 61-win season before falling to the Lakers in a memorable Western Conference Finals series.

The Kings continued to make the playoffs during his tenure but never again reached the rarified air they breathed in his first year.

Bibby’s time in Sacramento ended in 2008, when he was traded to Atlanta for a package of players and a draft choice.
