Although the 2024 NBA Finals are in full swing, the Los Angeles Lakers have managed to dominate the news headlines with their coaching search.

For the past month, the Lakers have been linked to several names, most prominently ESPN analyst JJ Redick.

However, this past week Los Angeles stole the thunder from the Finals series between the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks when reports surfaced that they were heavily targeting UConn’s Dan Hurley to be the franchise’s next head coach.

Hurley is coming off back-to-back titles with the Huskies, but the Lakers are reportedly adamant on luring him away from the east coast.

So far, the two sides have met to discuss what a partnership would look like but no decision has been made as of yet.

In the meantime, former Lakers star Nick Van Exel offered his thoughts on head coaching and why people don’t seem to understand it at the NBA level via his personal Twitter account.

“ALOT OF FOLKS REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THE NBA WORKS. I WILL SAY IT AGAIN. HAVE SOME REALLY TALENTED PLAYERS BUT THOSE PLAYERS MUST BUY IN TO WHAT WHOMEVER IS DELIVERING THE MESSAGE IS SAYING. ALL COACHES SPEAK THE SAME LANGUAGE. TRUST ME THEY DO. “Talented players must buy in” Van Exel tweeted.

As Van Exel notes, there seems to be misconception about how NBA head coaches operate and how it works with the locker room.

Typically, head coaches have the same sort of messages to their players but it all comes down to buy in and whether or not they’re willing to listen.
