By now, everybody is aware of the recent clubhouse discord that has been taking place with the St. Louis Cardinals.

After Tyler O’Neill was thrown out at the plate by Ronald Acuna Jr. on Tuesday night, manager Oli Marmol was quick to call him out for his apparent lack of hustle.

O’Neill responded by refuting Marmol’s claims.

However, the drama continued into Wednesday’s game, when Marmol explained why O’Neill was not in the starting lineup.

The Cardinals manager spoke about how the standard in St. Louis is to play hard.

On Twitter, former MLB pitcher Dallas Braden commented on the situation, acknowledging that the standard shouldn’t be hard to meet, but that it would have been better if the situation was handled internally.

If the “standard” is playing hard in St. Louis I don’t see Tyler O’Neill having an issue meeting that standard. I would however question the standard of publicly calling players out through the media as opposed to handling it internally first. That’s a tough “standard” to set.

There are always two sides to every story, and this one is no different.

While Marmol is correct in pointing out that O’Neill should have been running a little bit harder, Braden makes a fair point about the way it was handled, and that getting the media involved is a bad look for both Marmol and O’Neill.

Publicly calling out players to the media isn’t exactly the best standard to set, and it certainly is giving many people around the game some pause.

To make matters worse, the Cardinals lost their series finale to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday and were ultimately swept as they fell to 2-4 on the season.

Clearly, the issue was bagging the Cardinals down during Wednesday’s game and has ultimately caused an unnecessary stir.
