The San Antonio Spurs have usually fared well when their big men, especially those who are taken with the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.
David Robinson turned out to be quite decent, and Tim Duncan has one of the best resumés in the history of professional basketball.
Needless to say, that’s just one of the many reasons why everybody’s so excited about Victor Wembanyama and his development.
With that in mind, former NBA player Drew Gooden told Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson that he fully expects Wembanyama to be something like the second coming of Duncan.
Per Gooden, the similarities in their situations are obviously there, with Gregg Popovich signing a contract extension and everything.
He believes their skill sets are similar and predicted Wembanyama to be the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year at some point.
Truth be told, that’s the expectation with him, granted that he’s an elite rim protector already.
Nonetheless, as good as most people think he’ll be, it’s also worth noting that the Spurs will be extremely cautious with him, and they’ll bring him in slowly, spoon-feeding him throughout the way.
As promising as he is, he’s still a rookie, and there are more than enough reasons to be concerned about his long-term health and durability in this league.
It will take a while before we see him reach his full potential — if ever.
But once he’s ready, the rest of the league will definitely be in trouble, just like it happened with Robinson and Duncan.
