The NFL offseason can sometimes feel stale, as there isn’t typically a lot of news, especially near the end of July and August.
However, the current state of the running back position has kept reporters and analysts plenty busy.
Saquon Barkley has recently signed a one-year contract with the New York Giants, putting a bow on that situation.
The same cannot be said for Josh Jacobs and the Las Vegas Raiders, as he’s still slated to play under the franchise tag.
To many fans, Barkley and Jacobs’ situations appear to be similar in many ways.
However, Rick Spielman, the former general manager of the Minnesota Vikings, has recently discussed the difference between the two.
“I truly don’t know if Josh McDaniels wants Josh Jacobs on that roster,” Spielman said.

Spielman indicated that McDaniels’ style has always been “running back by committee” rather than a workhorse approach.
Jacobs did lead the NFL in rushing yards last season, a potential sign that the Raiders might sign him to an extension.
However, Spielman seems pessimistic about this situation, which could be a sign that Jacobs won’t end up in a similar situation to Barkley.
As Derek Carr has left the team, the Raiders will move forward with a new quarterback.
How this team will operate under Jimmy Garoppolo remains to be seen, but the scheme could look vastly different.
If they pass the ball more, it could mean a diminished role for Jacobs and the rest of the Raiders’ run game in general.
