The National Football League is more pass-happy now than ever.
The referees and rules protect offensive players — especially quarterbacks — more than any of their colleagues on the field.
And while that’s good for the show — and player safety should always be a priority — it’s also unfair with defensive players.
That’s why former NFL GM Scott Pioli believes the league should change one key rule to level the field a little.
Per Pioli, the defending team should be rewarded with a sack every time their defensive linemen manage to get past the offensive line and reach the QB to force him to throw the ball away.

This makes perfect sense.
The QB would still have to throw the ball away to avoid the sack — physically speaking — and it would also reward the defensive players’ great play.
Pioli believes the current status of the rule isn’t fair to the defense, stating that it actually punishes their solid play by giving the offense a do-over.
This way, players could still try and stay safe, but they’d have to pick up the next play from the point where they threw the ball away, thus finally rewarding the defense for doing their job.
Of course, we all know this is just wishful thinking and the NFL is never going to do anything to get scoring numbers down.
But it would be so nice to see good defense being rewarded instead of punished for a change.
