In the post-Tom Brady era and following 24 seasons under legendary head coach Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots are finally headed in another direction, with the team basically starting from scratch ahead of the 2024 NFL season.
It didn’t take team owner Robert Kraft long to find Belichick’s successor, with the team deciding to bring in former player Jerod Mayo to shoulder the load as the new leader on the sidelines, which was an unexpected choice.
Along with Mayo taking over for Belichick, the Patriots now have a new young and promising quarterback in town, with the team selecting Drake Maye out of the University of North Carolina with the No. 3 overall pick after Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels were taken by the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders with the first two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Although Williams and Daniels have already been named the Week 1 starters for their respective teams, Maye remains in limbo with only a couple of more weeks to go before the team goes on the road to face the Cincinnati Bengals.
According to former NFL general manager Mike Lombardi, the Patriots should go with veteran Jacoby Brissett under center right out of the gate instead of the rookie with the offensive line being shaky right now via The Pat McAfee Show.
“I think the Patriots should play Jacoby Brissett until they get the offensive line settled down. I don’t think you wanna put Drake Maye out there and have him lose confidence,” Lombardi said.

With the Patriots having no intention of being a playoff team right away after parting ways with Belichick, there’s no rush to get Maye on the field, especially if it may be an unnecessary risk with an offensive line that can’t protect him.
Although Lombardi prefers the veteran approach, what the Patriots decide to do heading into Week 1 remains to be seen.
