The 2023 NFL season will showcase a flex scheduling format for Thursday Night Football, which isn’t sitting well with current or former players.
This obviously gives the league flexibility to put the best games on the weekly showcase, and that is a good thing for the fans, with Thursday Night Football usually not having the best matchups.
However, it is clearly rubbing players the wrong way, with ESPN’s Marcus Spears making that point abundantly clear via NFL on ESPN.
“Players don’t like playing on Thursday. I did it my entire career with the Dallas Cowboys. … That ain’t fun for nobody.”

Although Spears makes his point as strongly as he can, and current players will almost certainly get behind him, the league doesn’t care as it all comes down to money and how much they can make by making Thursday Night Football more appealing to the fans.
Unfortunately, no matter how much current and former players protest against games on Thursday night, the NFL won’t stop trying to tweak it until it becomes as profitable as playing games on Sunday and Monday.
It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out during the 2023 campaign in the NFL and how much backlash the league gets from players about games on Thursday Night Football, especially the ones that will be flexed for better matchups throughout the year.
Only time will tell if the league can make Thursday Night Football must-see TV and how costly that might be for the health of its players, as injuries on the weekly event will almost certainly get highlighted by the media and players as a problem that needs to be fixed moving forward.
