The Baltimore Ravens finished the 2023 regular season with the No. 1-ranked scoring defense, and they used it to go all the way to the top of the AFC and secure home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Now, they’ll host the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC championship game with a trip to Las Vegas to play in the Super Bowl on the line.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson is playing at an MVP level this year, but former NFL defensive lineman and current NFL Network analyst Gerald McCoy said Baltimore’s defense will be what carries the Ravens to a Super Bowl because of how well-rounded they are in all areas of the field.

“They have All-Pros at every level – up front, at linebacker and in the secondary,” McCoy said. “And they are relentless and they have no weaknesses.”

A quick look around the roster confirms this: DT Justin Madubuike, linebacker Patrick Queen, and safety Kyle Hamilton all made the NFL’s All-Pro list this year, while edge rusher Roquan Smith joined the other three on the Pro Bowl roster.

This is a testament to the roster construction by general manager Eric DeCosta as well as the coaching of defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald, as those two built and then bred a defense that thwarted some of the best teams in the NFL this year.

Now, though, they’ll face arguably the best quarterback-head coach combo in the NFL in Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid.

Kansas City has been to six consecutive AFC championship games and won three of them – although they haven’t faced a team as good as the Ravens yet.
