The San Francisco 49ers found themselves in a difficult quarterback situation last year.

They turned to Brock Purdy out of desperation, who was able to lead them to an NFC Championship game berth.

While some analysts have used this run as a sign that Purdy should be their starter in 2023, others aren’t so sure.

In a recent conversation on FS1’s ‘Speak’, James Jones questioned what this year will look like for the 49ers’ quarterbacks.

After watching some of the 49ers’ practice, Jones said, “Purdy and Trey Lance look like this game is too fast for them right now.”

The typical sign of a great NFL quarterback is when the game feels slow to them.

This is often a mark against rookie or inexperienced quarterbacks who transition right from college into the NFL.

When the game is too fast, players tend to make a lot of mistakes, which often lead to turnovers.

For now, Jones believes both Purdy and Lance are in that position, a potential indication of struggles this season.

Jones did mention that he doesn’t necessarily believe Purdy is a “one-hit wonder,” but is overall worried about his success.

Teams are now ready for Purdy, which could not be said about him during the 2022 run to the playoffs.

With an entire offseason to prepare with his teammates, Kyle Shanahan has all but confirmed Purdy will be his starter.

Can he hold on to the job, performing well even when knowing teams in the league are prepared to face off against him?
