After their impressive, lopsided win over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers have become, in the minds of many, the favorite to win this season’s Super Bowl.
Quarterback Brock Purdy completed 19 of 27 pass attempts and threw for 314 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions to continue his improbable Cinderella story.
It has made him arguably the favorite to win the regular-season MVP award, but some are still doubting that he’s really all that.
There continue to be doubts about him due to his modest height at 6-foot-1, but former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III said his height doesn’t matter while backing up that assertion with stats.
Brock Purdy’s height was a question coming out of College. Can he see over the middle of the field? Against the Eagles, Purdy had 8 completions down middle for 156 yards. Purdy, the last player chosen in last year’s draft, started last season third on San Francisco’s depth chart before injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo forced him to take over under center in Week 13.
From the start of his time as the team’s starter, he played brilliantly, but at first, he was dismissed as a “system quarterback” who only succeeded because of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s great offensive mind and the Pro Bowlers around him.
When Purdy continued to put up great numbers this season, the critics said that he couldn’t play well against the league’s best teams.
But he has done exactly that, and he leads the league in passer rating, pass completion percentage, and QBR.
Another false narrative about Purdy was that he only threw short, safe passes and didn’t or couldn’t successfully push the ball downfield.
But he is also leading everyone in yards per pass completion and also yards per pass attempt and air yards per attempt.
With a 9-3 record, the 49ers now have a shot at claiming the top seed in the NFC.
