At 33 years old and after a long, successful career in the NFL, veteran running back Rex Burkhead has decided to retire, as he feels that now is the best time for him to walk away from the game.

During his career in the league, Burkhead played for three teams, starting with the Cincinnati Bengals, who drafted him with the No. 190 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

After a four-year stint with the Bengals, Burkhead signed a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, where he became a household name and ended up winning a Super Bowl as part of Tom Brady’s offense under legendary head coach Bill Belichick.

Following a successful stint with the Patriots, where he had the most success as a player in the NFL, Burkhead landed with the Houston Texans to play out the last two years of his career and after not playing in 2023, he decided to retire and say goodbye to the fans while thanking all of those that helped him along the way with this tweet.

Although Burkhead isn’t headed for the Hall of Fame and only a handful of fans from the fanbases of the three teams he played for will remember his contribution on the NFL level, he is a testament to hard work and what can be accomplished even if you are not a big-name player coming out of college or don’t see a lot of time on the field.

Burkhead is one of the many success stories that came out of the Patriots organization during the Belichick era, along with Julian Edelman and Danny Woodhead, who were players who were given a chance in New England and flourished.
