Offense wins games, but defense wins championships; that’s still true in the National Football League.
Even in today’s pass-happy era of high-scoring matchups, having a championship-caliber defense could be key to finding success in the postseason.
With that in mind, former NFL player Kevin Carter named his top five defensive players who’ll take the field on Sunday for Super Bowl LVIII.
Notably, he chose LB Dre Greenlaw (49ers), LB Nick Bolton (KC), LB Fred Warner (49ers), DE Nick Bosa (49ers), and DT Chris Jones Jr. (KC), so he clearly believes the Niners have the edge in that regard.

It’s interesting to see that other Niners stars, such as Charvarius Ward and Chase Young didn’t make the cut.
As for the Chiefs, the most obvious snubs might be Trent McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed.
There will be plenty of talent on both sides of the field at Allegiant Stadium, so it’s not like he could’ve gone wrong anyway.
The Niners obviously have an edge on the defensive line, but it seems like the Chiefs have the better secondary.
Also, Steve Spagnuolo has earned his stripes in this league and is a better defensive coordinator than Steve Wilks, mostly because Wilks has failed to have his defense ready to perform early in games.
Whatever the case, whoever takes the field will have to be at his best, as there’s no such thing as stopping Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce or Deebo Samuel and Christian McCaffrey, you can only hope to contain them.
