Now that he’s been hired by the Phoenix Suns, Frank Vogel will get the privilege to coach two of the greatest players of this generation — and of all time.
He already coached LeBron James with the Los Angeles Lakers, and now he’ll get to do his thing with Kevin Durant in the desert.
That’s why Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated asked him how he manages to handle himself around those kinds of players, and Vogel’s response was rather simple.
“The way you should handle a star player doesn’t change a whole bunch with regard to who that star player is”

The former Indiana Pacers coach cited that he learned a lot from being around Rob Pelinka and Kurt Rambis and how they dealt with the likes of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, stating that the way you should handle a star player doesn’t change a whole bunch with regard to who that star player is.
Notably, there were some reports about LeBron James snubbing him and his indications during his final days in Los Angeles, and some always questioned his ability to stay on top of a superstar like him.
Vogel will instill a much-needed defensive identity in the Suns, and he’s a championship-winning coach, so it’s hard to think of someone better for the job.
But it’s one thing to talk about coaching superstars and another to actually be able to hold them accountable, and that might be an issue for him in the desert.
