Gary Sanchez Is Turning Back The Clock In San Diego

MLB is filled with examples of players who struggle on one or multiple teams, only to switch uniforms and start producing.

There might be several reasons to explain this phenomenon, but it happens more often than you probably realize.

It has happened with Aaron Hicks, who failed miserably with the New York Yankees over the last three seasons before hitting his stride with the Baltimore Orioles.

It happened with Clay Holmes, who landed on the Yankees from the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021 after years of mediocrity and turned into a top-notch reliever in the Bronx.

And it’s happening right now with Gary Sanchez.

After a few unproductive campaigns with the Yanks from 2020 on, they traded him to the Minnesota Twins last year, where he had an uneven season (.659 OPS, just 16 home runs, and a boatload of strikeouts).

This year, he didn’t find a team until early April, when he signed with the San Francisco Giants.

He never quite caught fire with them or the New York Mets.

He just needed some patience.

Sanchez hit another home run on Tuesday and now has six in just 16 games this season.

All six long-balls have come with a San Diego Padres uniform, in 13 contests.

His OPS is at .903, and he has finally taken off with the Friars.

The Giants and Mets couldn’t afford to have patience with him, but the Padres did and they are seeing the results.

Can he return to his old form?

He is 30 years old, so he still is in his theoretical prime.

It will depend on a lot of variables, but his career is enjoying a much-needed resurgence in San Diego.
