Being a head coach in the NBA is no longer a glamourous position, as it has become a thankless job with little to no job security, as even some of the most prominent head coaches in the league have been fired a year after winning NBA Coach of the Year.
The NBA Finals haven’t even come to an end yet, with the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat battling it out, and a number of the best head coaches in the league have been fired and rehired elsewhere.
Perhaps the most shocking firing was the Phoenix Suns parting ways with Monty Williams after the team failed to get the best of the Nuggets in the second round of the playoffs.
Williams won Coach of the Year in 2022 and came two wins shy of reaching the Western Conference Finals, but it wasn’t enough for the Suns brass, as they moved on quickly and now have hired Frank Vogel to be his successor in Phoenix.
Other notable firings included Mike Budenholzer, Doc Rivers, and Nick Nurse, who have all since been replaced.
During an appearance on Run It Back via FanDuel TV, former NBA head coach George Karl talked about coaching in the league today and how the expectations for head coaches are way too high in today’s game.

The sad part of all of this is, at some point, wanting to be a head coach in the NBA will be a thing of the past because they don’t get paid anywhere near as much as players, and job security doesn’t exist anymore.
However, there are some success stories with Erik Spoelstra, Gregg Popovich, and Steve Kerr keeping their jobs for quite some time, but their resumes have earned that kind of job security, and coaches these days aren’t given enough time to get to that point.
