In recent days, the San Francisco Giants had been flirting with the possibility of hiring Bob Melvin to be their new skipper.
There was one problem: he was still under contract with the San Diego Padres for one more season, 2024.
Still, that didn’t stop the manager from asking permission to interview with the Giants; something that the Padres allowed.
On Tuesday, the rumors became true: Melvin will be the next manager of the Giants, according to two trusted sources.
“Bob Melvin will be the next manager of the San Francisco Giants, per @extrabaggs & @sdutKevinAcee,” MLB on FOX tweeted, crediting the two reporters who broke the news.

Melvin managed the Padres for two years.
The first one, 2022, yielded a National League Championship Series appearance, which was the main reason why the organization and fans were so optimistic about the franchise’s 2023 outlook.
However, the team failed to make the playoffs this year with a rather mediocre 82-80 record.
Perhaps that was the main reason why Melvin’s relationship with management and ownership started to erode.
It’s unclear if the Giants will send some type of compensation to the Padres for breaking their deal with Melvin.
After a few weeks looking for someone to replace Gabe Kapler, the Giants finally got their man in Melvin.
The Padres, on the other hand, will now have to look for a new skipper.
Melvin is a highly experienced dugout leader with a 1,517-1,425 record and a .516 career winning percentage as a manager.
His postseason winning percentage of .410 (16-23) is a tad disappointing, though.
Still, the Giants are fully confident in his abilities and they just proved it.
