The NBA draft is a wild event that opens the doors of the future for many up-and-coming basketball prospects.

For some, it’s an evening filled with amazing and welcome surprises and for others, it’s a time of disappointment.

Speaking to All The Smoke Productions, Gilbert Arenas spoke about his time in the draft and how he felt let down by it all.

He said that he expected to be the best of the best in his rookie class and was met by many other stars he wasn’t familiar with.

And when he fell into the second round, he was disheartened and upset but vowed that he’d be a starter in only a matter of months.

Arenas was the 31st overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft.

He was in the second round despite the fact that he had just won a national championship in college only months before.

Because of his success in college, Arenas thought he’d be one of the most wanted players in the draft but he had a lot of tough competition.

Kwame Brown was the top pick in that year’s draft, and stars such as Pau Gasol, Joe Johnson, Zach Randolph, Tyson Chandler, and others populated the list of rookies.

Arenas wanted to be above all of them but that wasn’t in the cards that night.

His story shows that no matter what players and analysts think, the only opinions that matter are those running NBA teams.

They make the final decisions and can radically alter draft night in seconds with one simple choice.
