Back in the offseason, some fans and analysts raved about how Grant Williams was just what the Dallas Mavericks needed.
On paper, that seemed to be the case.
Williams was a reliable three-point shooter and looked like a glue guy on both ends of the floor as well, someone with playoff experience who could guard multiple positions, grab some boards, and even make plays for others.
That wasn’t the case at all.
His play wasn’t productive, and reports claim that his attitude rubbed plenty of people the wrong way, up to the point where he was traded midway through the season.
Williams found his way to the Charlotte Hornets, with P.J. Washington going to Dallas to provide everything the fans thought Williams would bring to the table.
Now, the former Boston Celtics forward revealed that he was almost traded to the Milwaukee Bucks, but the deal eventually fell through (via NBACentral and HornetsReddit).

Williams gave the Mavs organization props for trying to find him a good situation, adding that he felt like the Hornets were just the right fit for them.
Charlotte isn’t a playoff-caliber team, but Williams’ numbers, playing time, and overall game went way up as soon as he arrived in North Carolina.
The Mavericks, on the other hand, went on to become one of the best defensive teams in the league with Washington and Daniel Gafford making their way to Texas.
It’s funny how things work out in this league at times, but props to the Mavs for not doubling down on a mistake and addressing it on time.
