For the teams not headed for the Play-In Tournament or NBA playoffs, Sunday is the last day of the 2023-24 NBA regular season, which means Victor Wembanyama’s first season in the NBA will officially come to an end today.
Although the Spurs failed to live up to expectations this year with Wembanyama in the fold, the French phenom didn’t disappoint as he played his part and showed why he’s one of the most promising young players since the arrival of LeBron James in 2003.
Wembanyama will almost certainly run away with the NBA Rookie of the Year award, beating out Chet Holmgren of the Oklahoma City Thunder, who also had a stellar first official season in the league, and the future is very bright for the new Spurs superstar.
Along with winning over the fans in San Antonio and around the world, Wembanyama has also won over legendary head coach Gregg Popovich, who compared his new superstar’s mentality to Tim Duncan’s, via ClutchPoints.
“He’s [Victor Wembanyana] a competitor, he wants to win… he has those Tim Duncan qualities of innate basketball IQ,” Popovich said.

After a full season of NBA basketball, there’s no question Wembanyama has what it takes to become one of the best players in the league, as he can get it done on both ends and do things on the basketball floor that we’ve never seen before.
The pressing question from here on out is whether the Spurs can surround him with enough talent to be successful, which is something they failed to do this season, as it was abundantly clear that the team needs some massive upgrades to the roster.
