There were a lot of conflicting reports about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offseason plans for the quarterback position.
Some stated that they weren’t interested in Justin Fields because they were ready to go with Penny Pickett again, adding that they wanted to give him another opportunity, this time with a different coordinator.
Then, all of a sudden, the reports of their interest in Russell Wilson surfaced.
Now, the former Super Bowl champion is heading to Pittsburgh on a one-year, $1.2 million deal.
Most people would assume that Wilson is going to be QB1, with Pickett being demoted to a secondary position.
Nonetheless, as much sense as that would make, NFL insider Adam Schefter claims the Steelers will try and portray it differently (via Awful Announcing).
“I think Mike Tomlin will declare this to be an open competition. I think we — in the media — will believe that Russell Wilson will step up and seize that opportunity. But I don’t think Mike Tomlin is gonna come out and anoint Russell Wilson as his new starting quarterback.” https://t.co/tFlesThlzi pic.twitter.com/owR8smcj6T

Schefter stated that the fans and the media will make it seem like Wilson is the obvious candidate to be the starter, but he thinks HC Mike Tomlin will have an open competition and something that will have to be earned on the field.
Even if that were the case, Wilson shouldn’t find much trouble getting the nod over the ever-struggling Pickett.
The Steelers used a first-round pick on him, so they obviously want and need things to work out for him.
However, perhaps he’s still too raw and needs more time on the sidelines before fulfilling the potential they saw in him, even though most scouts and fans were never actually sold on him as a potential NFL quarterback.
