The San Antonio Spurs got a generational talent.

While the 2023 NBA Draft won’t take place until late June, it’s almost a fact that they intend to take French big man Victor Wembanyama with that No. 1 pick; there’s simply no debate this time.

That’s why Brian Windhorst of ESPN traveled all the way to Paris to interview the star prospect and watch his live reaction to finding out where he’s going to live a couple of months from now.

.@WindhorstESPN told us what it was like for Victor Wembanyama to hear the Spurs won the Draft Lottery:

“He became emotional … He wiped a tear away a little bit. His mom was right next to him. … They knew San Antonio would be a terrific spot for him.” pic.twitter.com/wSrmZxs9yb

And according to Windhorst, Wembanyama and his family were quite emotional, as they knew the Spurs would be a great situation for him and his development.

The Spurs have a long history of success with international players and player development, not to mention the fact that they have arguably the greatest coach in the history of the game in Gregg Popovich.

David Robinson and Tim Duncan were also No. 1 picks by the Spurs and helped them establish a winning culture and build a dynasty that lasted almost two decades, and now it could be Wembanyama’s time to carry the torch and keep on that legacy.

Notably, Duncan has stayed pretty close to the organization and has worked out with some of their youngsters, so you can be sure that he’ll take a hands-on approach to try and bring the best out of Wembanyama as well.

Truth be told, it was hard to think of a better situation for an international player with that skill set, even if the rest of the league might not be thrilled about it.
