The New York Giants are in need of a breakout star in their backfield after the team’s best player, Saquon Barkley, left the team in free agency this offseason to sign with the rival Philadelphia Eagles, leaving the team with a gaping void at the running back spot and without an obvious solution.
One team insider recently highlighted an impressive debut one rookie RB had in the first preseason game.
Dan Schneier of CBS Sports shared on X that rookie running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. had an impressive debut in Thursday’s 14-3 win in the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, noting that Tracy “appears to have the lead for RB2” and praised him for showing “excellent yards after contact upside that carried over from college” and “good patience and processing.”
Certainly an impressive debut for #Giants rookie RB Tyrone Tracy Jr.
1. Appears to have lead for RB2
2. Showed excellent yards after contact upside that carried over from college
3. Good patience and processing, got skinny when he needed to
4. Showed burst/acceleration https://t.co/VjA37ZKpVy

Tracy had five carries for 26 yards in the game and wasn’t targeted in the passing game.
Tracy was selected in the fifth round of the draft out of Purdue and will turn 25 years old in November after spending six years in college, with the first four coming at Iowa before transferring to Purdue.
The RB didn’t see extended time out of the backfield until his last college season after spending five years as a wide receiver before moving positions, and he took to running back well by posting 716 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on just 113 carries as a senior.
Devin Singletary is the clear starter in the backfield, and Tracy is presumably in a battle with Eric Gray to handle carries behind Singletary.
Gray posted 52 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries on Thursday night and handled 17 carries as a rookie fifth-round pick out of Oklahoma last season.
