Tom Brady’s retirement immediately left a hole in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense.
Having a future Hall of Fame quarterback on the roster was a massive advantage, and the Buccaneers were forced to go to the drawing board.
Kyle Trask was immediately believed to be their starter given his second-round draft capital.
However, the team did bring in Baker Mayfield as competition for Trask, who has performed well throughout camp.
As JC Cornell has recently reported, it appears that Mayfield will be the Week 1 starter if he does well in their preseason game.
I’ve chatted with numerous well plugged in people with the Bucs. Seems that the consensus is that it’s Baker Mayfield’s job to lose.
If Baker has a solid game on Friday night it will be an extremely uphill battle for Trask to win this job.
That being said there’s a decent…

However, Cornell also said that both quarterbacks will likely see the field at some point throughout the year.
The Buccaneers might be in a transition phase as an organization.
Unless he plays lights-out, Mayfield might be a stopgap for the Buccaneers until they find a QB they are fully confident in.
The good news for Mayfield is that the NFC South is up for grabs.
The New Orleans Saints are slated to roll out Derek Carr at quarterback.
While Carr has found NFL success, he could experience growing pains with a new team.
The same can be said about the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers, who will begin the year with young quarterbacks at the helm.
If they struggle early, it could be a relatively easy path for Mayfield and the Buccaneers to capitalize, starting the year with a head-start on the divisional race.
How will the Buccaneers’ season play out with a new quarterback taking over?
