The Kansas City Chiefs were stunned on Thursday Night Football as they lost at home to the Detroit Lions, 21-20.
The Chiefs were widely projected to win the game, but the Lions came out and were diligent in their game plan of establishing the run and capitalizing on the lack of a pass rush as Chris Jones was out as he continues to negotiate an extension.
For Kansas City, the offense looked uncharacteristically discombobulated as they were without Travis Kelce who hyper-extended his knee earlier that week in practice.
Without Kelce, Patrick Mahomes was forced to lean on his wide receiver corps which largely let him down.
Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore were almost non-existent in the passing game, deeply hurting the team’s ability to move the chains.
Kelce came into the game as questionable and it appears that he avoided a major injury.
“The plan is to have him run tomorrow, and as long as there is no swelling, he should be back for Week 2 against the Jaguars.” according to Jay Glazer via Ari Meirov.
The #Chiefs were initially concerned that TE Travis Kelce suffered a season-ending tibia plateau fracture during Tuesday’s practice, per @JayGlazer. However, it turned out to be just a “very deep” bone bruise, and Kelce has been making progress every day.

If Kansas City had lost Kelce for the season, it would have severely hurt their chances of defending their Super Bowl championship.
The All-Pro tight end is the focal point of the passing game and Mahomes’ favorite target, so it’s good to hear that he should return for Week 2 assuming there are no setbacks with his knee.
Although Chiefs fans can breathe a sigh of relief that one of the stars avoided a serious injury, it goes to show that anything can happen.
Kansas City may be starting the 2023 NFL season 0-1, but there’s reason to believe they’ll turn things around quickly when Kelce returns.
