The Miami Heat are entering a key offseason.
Jimmy Butler is eligible to sign a contract extension, and the word around the league is that he’s looking to get top dollar again.
On paper, he’s earned that.
However, he’s about to be 35 years old and has a history of injuries.
Also, Pat Riley’s latest comments about him and how he called him out for mocking the Boston Celtics have raised questions about his future with the organization.
With that in mind, Philadelphia 76ers insider Keith Pompey claimed that the team that could make the most sense as a potential trade partner is the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Still, he didn’t state that was about to happen or even hint at the Cavaliers being interested in him; he just thinks it would make sense for both parties:
“This is just me talking, I didn’t ask anybody questions or anything like that. But the one team that, if they were willing to trade Jimmy, I don’t know if they are, the one team I would pay attention to is the Cleveland Cavaliers,” Pompey said.
He could be on point.
The Heat are in major need of a lead guard, and perhaps they could get the best out of Darius Garland, not to mention some draft picks.
They wouldn’t want to send Butler back to Philadelphia, which is a potential postseason rival.
Then again Butler has never even hinted at being uncomfortable or dissatisfied in South Beach.
If anything, he’s led the team to two trips to the NBA Finals since he joined them, so perhaps they’ll look to double down on him and add more talent around him instead of pulling the plug and sending him somewhere else.
