There has been some concern within the Seattle Seahawks fan base about their recent string of rookie injuries over the past couple of years.
That’s why it wasn’t surprising to see that same concern about their new prized rookie, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who was slated to undergo preseason surgery.
The first-round pick looked great early in training camp and during limited preseason action.
But he suffered a wrist fracture while facing the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2, and while HC Pete Carroll claimed there was nothing to worry about, some feared he wasn’t going to be able to be on the field for the start of the season.
Now, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network has some great news for the fans, stating that Smith-Njigba will start the season on the active roster, meaning he successfully avoided the IR/designated to return list.
#Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who recently underwent surgery to repair a small broken bone in his wrist, is expected to begin the season on the active roster, source said. No word yet on his availability for W1, but avoiding IR/designated to return is a sign he’ll play soon.

That means there’s a big chance he’s out there for the first game of the season, which is obviously way sooner than the initial reports of three or four weeks as a recovery timeline.
There are high hopes for who some considered to be the best wideout prospect in this class, especially considering he’ll join an already talented group featuring the likes of Tyler Lockett and D.K. Metcalf.
Geno Smith and the Seahawks’ offense fared much better than expected last season, and judging by the current look of the NFC West, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them go toe-to-toe with the San Francisco 49ers for the top spot in the division this season.
