The Arizona Cardinals placed quarterback Kyler Murray on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to begin the 2023 NFL season.

In theory, he could return to the active roster after their Week 4 game against the San Francisco 49ers.

However, an NFL insider said he won’t return to action soon.

“Cardinals’ quarterback Kyler Murray is not expected to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list when he becomes eligible Monday and still is considered weeks away from playing, league sources told ESPN,” insider Adam Schefter tweeted.

Murray is still sidelined by a non-contact knee injury he suffered during the Cardinals’ 2022 Week 14 Monday Night Football game against the New England Patriots.

The following day, it was revealed that he had a season-ending ACL tear.

The Cardinals placed him on injured reserve in December of last year, an unfortunate blow for a quarterback who signed a five-year, $230.5 million contract extension during the 2022 offseason.

The Cardinals drafted Murray with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

After winning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, he became a Pro Bowler in consecutive seasons (2020 and 2021).

Joshua Dobbs will remain Arizona’s starting quarterback as they make the trip to Levi’s Stadium for their Week 4 matchup.
