One of the most fascinating teams in the NFL this season is the New England Patriots.

Not only is this going to be the first season without Bill Belichick being the head coach in almost a quarter-century, but the team also drafted rookie quarterback Drake Maye to eventually lead the franchise.

The No. 3 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft has a chance to start Week 1, according to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.

“I do see a chance of Drake Maye becoming the starter in Week 1. He’ll just have to outplay Jacoby Brissett,” Kyed recently wrote.

In situations like this, rebuilding teams tend to let the veteran quarterback start while the young quarterback learns from the sidelines for a few weeks.

Brissett, who was drafted by the Pats back in 2016, has been around the block as a starter and a backup.

He has played for five different teams in the first eight seasons of his career and is now on his second stint with the Patriots.

Kyed did note that Maye has the talent to beat out Brissett and could do so in training camp.

Keep in mind that Maye was the ACC Player of the Year and a multi-time All-ACC performer while at North Carolina.

His 6-4, 230-pound frame and ability to make a difference through the air and on the ground can take this Patriots offense to another level.

It will be up to him to outplay the veteran in Brissett, and time will tell to see if the former Tar Heel can do exactly that.
