On Monday, every NFL team that franchise tagged a player had the deadline of 4 p.m. EST to get a long-term deal done with those players if that’s what they intended to do.

The two prominent players that were franchise tagged by their teams and have been in contract talks for quite some time were Josh Jacobs of the Las Vegas Raiders and Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants.

Although these two players are arguably among the elite backs in the NFL, the consensus was that neither player would get a deal done with their team before the deadline, and that’s exactly what happened.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Giants were unable to see eye-to-eye on a new deal with Barkley ahead of the deadline on Monday afternoon.

No deal for the #Giants and star RB Saquon Barkley, with talks going down to the wire and the best efforts made to strike a compromise, per me, @TomPelissero, and @MikeGarafolo. He’ll play on the tag, but the question is when. pic.twitter.com/DxbEHiRlKL

Much like Jacobs, Barkley is coming off a career year, with the former Penn State star racking up over 1,600 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns while helping the Giants get into the NFL playoffs.

Despite a solid season, the Giants still don’t seem to value Barkley the way he feels he should be in New York, but this is becoming the trend in the NFL, where even the best running backs in the league aren’t getting long-term deals.

If or when Barkley signs his franchise tag, he’ll earn a little over $10 million for the 2023 NFL season, and then it will be back to the negotiating table where New York can franchise tag him again rather than come to terms on a deal longer than one year.
