Many wide receivers have gotten sizeable bags this offseason either via free agency or contract extensions with their current teams, but one notable receiver who is yet to get paid is Cincinnati Bengals star Tee Higgins, who has been open about his desires to get a long-term deal and even demanded a trade earlier in the offseason.
One insider recently revealed where the two parties stand in terms of the next steps and shared what Higgins’ contract situation will look like for this upcoming season.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport shared that the Bengals will not be signing Higgins to an extension by Monday’s deadline and the receiver will go through with playing on his franchise tag before becoming one of the top free agents of the 2025 offseason.
It has appeared evident for some time, but for clarity:

Higgins is set to earn $21.8 million this upcoming season on the tag and by not signing an extension, it becomes much more likely this will be his last year in Cincinnati as the Bengals also have to budget for potentially signing Ja’Marr Chase to an extension, as Higgins’ wide receiver counterpart will be in the same situation next offseason as Tee is this season.
This offense lost running back Joe Mixon to the Houston Texans and offensive coordinator Brian Callahan to the Tennessee Titans, and Callahan also brought wide receiver Tyler Boyd with him to Tennessee as well.
Higgins and Chase have been the heart of this team’s skill position group since they entered the league, and their roles will be even more important this year as Higgins looks to ball out and cash out next offseason.
