Things are starting to change in the NFL when it comes to star running backs and their value to their teams, with this year, in particular, seeming like the beginning of the end of long-term deals for the best and brightest coming out of the backfield.
Although this has been a concern among running backs for quite some time, things were taken to another level last week when Pro Bowlers Tony Pollard, Saquon Barkley, and Josh Jacobs were unable to agree to long-term deals with their respective teams because those teams were confident with these players playing under a franchise tag next season.
Even though the $10 million these three stars will make next season isn’t a bad annual salary in the NFL, none of these players have any security beyond next season, which has every running back in the league concerned about where things are headed when it comes to their position.
According to Dov Kleiman of Bro Bible, some of the elite running backs in the NFL got together for a Zoom call this weekend to discuss what they can do to prevent the value of his their position from diminishing, with Los Angeles Chargers star Austin Ekeler organizing the call.

With this situation being the talk of the NFL over the past week or so, it’ll be interesting to see where it goes and if these star players can figure out a way to combat the new norm in the league to not pay running backs what they’re worth.
Only time will tell if something can be done and how teams will respond to these star running backs coming together to take on this problem as one rather than individually.
