The Philadelphia Eagles gave the New York Jets permission to discuss a contract extension with Haason Reddick before trading for him.
And while he turned down their offer, they reportedly agreed that they would discuss another deal based on his performance next season.
That’s why the Jets were shocked to see that Reddick decided to hold out for OTAs and the start of training camp.
The Jets reportedly drew a line in the sand and won’t even consider giving him a new deal unless he shows up, but that appears to have changed.
According to a report by NFL insider Josina Anderson, both parties have made big strides in their negotiations.
I’m told Haason Reddick’s talks with the #Jets progressed positively this week and as of earlier today there’s recent hope that Reddick’s presence and acclimation process with the team is approaching, per sources. Apparently, the star pass-rusher is expected to get on the field and acclimated to his new team soon.
He’s one of the best defensive players in the game, and with Bryce Huff leaving, the Jets most definitely need him there to boost their already-impressive defense.
Reddick is entering the final year of his contract and is looking to get a significant pay raise before even stepping on the field with his new team.
The Jets will be hard-pressed to get a deal done with him.
They’re looking to make a Super Bowl run and their title window might close in just a couple of years.
And with GM Joe Douglas doubling down on Aaron Rodgers and going all-in this offseason, he needs the team to be as good as expected to hold onto his job for longer.
