The San Antonio Spurs needed a point guard, so they went out and got one of the best this game has ever seen.
It was kind of surprising to see Chris Paul signing with a team like the Spurs at this point in his career, as he’s going to move again and won’t play for a contender.
Nonetheless, having an opportunity to play with Victor Wembanyama was too good to pass up.
According to Chris Haynes, Paul and Gregg Popovich had a long talk, and the legendary point guard was immediately sold on the Spurs’ culture (via NBA TV).

This also sends Wembanyama the message that they’re trying to field a better team and be better and more competitive next season and in the foreseeable future.
Now, they’ll have one of the most cerebral and knowledgeable players in the history of the game ready to mentor them and teach them the ins and outs of the game.
Besides his partnership with Wembanyama, he’s also going to be a great mentor for Stephon Castle, who could end up being the team’s point guard of the future.
This was a strange career move for Paul at this point, and winning a ring is definitely out of the question here, but his impact in San Antonio will be massive.
