After spending his entire NBA career with the Golden State Warriors, which resulted in four NBA titles and the distinction as being part of the best shooting backcourt ever, Klay Thompson has decided to leave the team that drafted him and ink a three-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks.

Although it was no secret that Thompson would likely leave the Warriors in NBA free agency this summer, as the two sides struggled to see eye-to-eye on a contract extension, the big question was where he would land once he hit the open market.

Apparently, the Thompson sweepstakes came down to two teams, with the Los Angeles Lakers competing with the Mavericks for the services of the future Hall of Famer, as general manager Rob Pelinka has been determined to put another star next two LeBron James and Anthony Davis in the City of Angels.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Thompson reportedly received more lucrative offers from the Lakers and other interested teams in free agency but seemed to have prioritized winning another championship, so he decided to join the reigning Western Conference champions.

Thompson had four-year offers for more money, but taking less was offset by the chance to win a fifth championship with the Mavs and difference in state taxes. Agent Greg Lawrence of @wassbasketball led Thompson in serious talks with Mavs and Lakers, among others.

With Thompson joining the Mavericks to play with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving in Dallas, the Lakers and Warriors will have to move on, hoping to find an upgrade through trades or free agency.

For the Mavericks, Dallas has improved its chances of remaining a heavyweight in the West and competing for a title in the coming years by adding another elite shooter with championship experience.
