The Minnesota Vikings were dealt a tough hand by the football gods recently when first-round quarterback J.J. McCarthy tore his meniscus in the team’s first preseason game last week.

Now, it is veteran Sam Darnold’s show.

The team also has another veteran in Nick Mullens on the depth chart, as well as second-year quarterback Jaren Hall.

That depth behind Darnold might not be good enough, according to insider Ian Rapoport.

“I would expect the Vikings to kind of keep their eyes open for a veteran quarterback,” Rapoport recently said on NFL Network.

Per @RapSheet, the #Vikings are going to “keep their eyes open for a veteran QB”

Rapoport noted it would likely be a released or cut player over these next couple weeks but also reassured Sam Darnold was QB1 for the team.

Rapoport also noted that Minnesota believes Darnold is their starting quarterback moving forward.

The Vikings do not have a ton of quarterback success on the roster.

Even though Darnold has 56 games worth of starting experience, he has a career record of just 21-35 as a starter.

He was not able to make it work in New York with the Jets or in Carolina with the Panthers at the beginning of his career, which is why he had to take his time and sit on the bench last year in San Francisco.

Nick Mullens is entering his eighth NFL season and has a career record of 5-15 as a starter.

Jaren Hall went 1-1 in two games as the starter last season as a rookie before being replaced.

Perhaps the Vikings could look into adding Ryan Tannehill or another veteran quarterback after they cut their roster down.

With the loss of McCarthy, the Vikings are an even bigger question mark heading into 2024, even if Darnold is the starter.
