Under the NBA’s new CBA, spending comes with heavy penalties which is why teams like the Golden State Warriors find themselves in a position of uncertainty regarding their roster.
In years past, the Warriors’ ownership group and front office has blown past the luxury tax to field contenders, but after missing the playoffs this past season the franchise must now pivot toward rebuilding around its youth.
It’s a tricky balancing act for Golden State who still has Draymond Green and Stephen Curry on the roster, but the reality of the league is that keeping several high-priced players makes almost no financial sense.
Unfortunately for Warriors fans, the dynasty appears to be coming to an end as the organization seems prepared to lose Klay Thompson in free agency.
Thompson declined a two-year extension earlier in the year from Golden State, and appears set to test his market in free agency.
Although several playoff teams don’t have the requisite cap space to sign Thompson to a massive deal, it appears he could be willing to take a paycut to join either of the two Los Angeles teams via Jake Fischer of Yahoo.
“Word is circulating among league personnel that Thompson could be willing to take (the $13M MLE) in order to join the Lakers or Clippers,” Fischer reported.

Both the Lakers and Clippers are facing enormous pressure to win a title, and landing Thompson on the mid-level exception would be a coup.
The Dallas Mavericks are another team looking to add Thompson, so he should have his share of options once free agency officially kicks off.
