Many people feel the Western Conference is only going to become deeper and more competitive as time goes on past this year’s playoffs.

There are a few very good teams there that are on the rise, and one of them is the Sacramento Kings.

After going 16 straight seasons without making the playoffs, the Kings broke the drought last year, and they have a team that could be one or two pieces away from being a championship contender.

Head coach Mike Brown has led the turnaround in Sacramento, and Jake Fischer reported that the team is expected to give him a long-term extension this offseason that could be worth around $10 million a year, per Evan Sidery.

Brown was hired by the Kings prior to last season, and at the time, they had some viable young talent but had failed to put it together.

In the 2022-23 season, he got them to the playoffs as the third seed in the West while leading the NBA in scoring and offensive rating and finishing third in assists.

Brown has been around a long time — he was first hired to be an NBA head coach by the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005 — and he has certainly evolved when it comes to his offensive philosophies.

Back in the day, he was known for his slowdown offenses, but his Kings teams have played at a fast pace and embraced a half-court offense that has plenty of quick ball and player movement.

Guard De’Aaron Fox is looking like he’s perhaps a legitimate franchise player, while big man Domantas Sabonis is one of the league’s most underrated centers.

After many years of ineptitude, the future is looking bright for the Kings, and Brown has a lot to do with that.
