The Detroit Pistons have now officially joined the race for a new coach.

That also means they’ve officially joined the race for James Borrego as well.

The former Charlotte Hornets coach has gotten plenty of attention in the offseason, and he’s become the most sought-after candidate among coach-needy teams.

According to Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports, the Pistons will strongly consider making a run at him after parting ways with Monty Williams.

Borrego has also interviewed with the Cleveland Cavaliers — who were said to be quite close to signing him — and the Los Angeles Lakers — who are also considering JJ Redick.

His coaching record isn’t particularly impressive, but he comes with plenty of experience as an assistant coach.

The Pistons let Williams go after just one season despite still having to pay him more than $65 million.

That speaks volumes about the level of disappointment and expectations for this team.

They won just 14 games last season.

More than that, they were expected to fare much better with a full season of Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey coexisting in the backcourt.

The Pistons have plenty of young talent to build around, with Ausar Thompson and Jalen Duren also in the mix.

They will add another top-10 selection to that mix, so whoever ends up getting the job will have more than enough weapons at his disposal.

And with a new president there, it seems like there won’t be much patience with their new coach either.
