Last week, new Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton kept it real when he made some poignant comments about what went wrong with them last season.
Denver traded for future Hall of Fame quarterback Russell Wilson last offseason, which led to many expecting them to contend for the Super Bowl, but instead, they finished 5-12 and missed the playoffs.
Payton particularly targeted Nathaniel Hackett, who was the Broncos’ head coach for most of last season and is now the New York Jets’ offensive coordinator, in his comments.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport said that many coaches around the NFL were upset by Payton’s comments.

It wasn’t a great thing to say in the coaching community but he was just saying what he thinks” ~ @RapSheet #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/ergIi4E58y

The warning signs were on full display for Denver in Week 1 of 2022 when they let the clock run down late in the fourth quarter with the game on the line against the Seattle Seahawks instead of calling a time-out or lining up to snap the ball.
They ended up being saddled with one of the worst offenses anyone could ever remember seeing in the NFL, and they also committed many miscues and unforced errors.
Wilson also had his worst season ever, which led many to believe that he’s now on the downside of his career.
But Payton is steadfast in his belief that Wilson will bounce back strong and look like the player he was with the Seattle Seahawks.
That is exactly what will need to happen if the Broncos are to make the playoffs in an ultra-competitive AFC this season, let alone contend for a spot in the Super Bowl.
