The New England Patriots didn’t get to go through what most teams usually go through.

More often than not, a team is good for some years, and then kind of retools and fails to compete at the highest level, either because their stars move on, get hurt, or get older.

For two decades, the Patriots ruled the AFC, with Tom Brady winning six Super Bowls.

Now, it’s been five years since anybody thought of them as even a minor threat to go the distance, and judging by the way things have gone lately, it might be some more time before that’s the case again.

However, Patriots analyst Phil Perry believes the fans should cut the team some slack.

Talking on NBC Sports Boston, he claimed that some executives around the league were shocked at the fact that the Patriots were actually able to get a third-round pick for Matthew Judon, so the value was just too good to ignore.

The 32-year-old pass rusher was their best player two years ago before a bicep injury forced him to miss most of last season.

He was disgruntled with the way the Patriots handled his contract situation, up to the point that it just made more sense for them to part ways with him.

Of course, this move won’t do much to help the Patriots’ cause in 2024.

But it could still have a major impact down the road, depending on how they put that valuable selection to use in the upcoming NFL Draft.
