The 2023 NFL offseason has been full of contract discussions.

Between several quarterbacks being locked down as franchise stars to the running market tanking, fans have been treated to lots of drama.

One position that hasn’t been discussed much is tight end, which has recently changed.

According to Diana Russini via Dov Kleiman, Minnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson wants to “reset the market” with a new deal.

Update: #Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson wants to reset the market with an “historic contract extension” for tight ends, per @DMRussini

Hockenson is still on his rookie deal and is looking for a massive extension.

For context, the largest current tight-end contract is held by Darren Waller, set to receive $17 million per season, per Spotrac.

It’s unclear what type of contract Hockenson is seeking and what his requested annual value will be.

While the details of a potential contract are not known, Russini indicated that he and the Vikings are “far apart.”

With two weeks to go until the regular season begins, it’s unlikely that a deal will be constructed before then.

In the aftermath of this request, many fans and pundits have wondered if Hockenson is worth a long-term extension in the first place.

Last year, Hockenson was the second-highest targeted tight end in the league, just behind Travis Kelce.

He turned those targets into 86 receptions and six touchdowns, a valuable offensive asset.

However, the Vikings have more to worry about than Hockenson at this time.

Justin Jefferson is also on his rookie deal, likely a higher priority for the team.

Plus, Kirk Cousins is in the last year of his contract, and they will either be in search of a new deal with him or move on to a new QB.
