After a very dismal 2023 season in which they finished with the worst record in the NFL, the Carolina Panthers have hired a new general manager in Dan Morgan.

He will have a lot of work to do, as the team has tremendous needs on both sides of the football.

Morgan spent seven seasons as a linebacker for the Panthers, and he has worked in the front office for the Panthers, Seattle Seahawks, and Buffalo Bills for a number of years.

Adam Schefter outlined Morgan’s resume in a post on Twitter.

New Panthers GM Dan Morgan:

Drafted No. 11 overall by the Panthers in 2001.

Made the Pro Bowl in 2004.

Morgan was the No. 11 pick in the 2001 NFL Draft after four successful seasons at the University of Miami, and during that time, he won a number of individual honors, including All-American honors and the Big East Defensive Player of the Year as a senior.

In the pros, he was named to the Pro Bowl in 2004 while playing a key role in the Panthers reaching the Super Bowl during the 2003 season.

In that Super Bowl, he set a record with 18 tackles as Carolina lost to the New England Patriots on a last-second field goal by kicker Adam Vinatieri.

There was some hope for Carolina this season thanks to the addition of quarterback Bryce Young, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, and the additions of wide receiver Adam Thielen and running back Miles Sanders.

But Young had a rough season, and to make matters worse, they gave up their 2024 first-rounder, which would’ve been the No. 1 pick, in a trade with the Chicago Bears that got them last year’s No. 1 pick.

Morgan will have to craft a long-term plan that will eventually result in the Panthers’ third trip to the Super Bowl.
