When looking at the Los Angeles Dodgers’ offseason, it is hard to not overreact.
They have signed Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency while trading for Tyler Glasnow.
It is fair to say the Dodgers have created a superteam.
Adding the reigning AL MVP to a team with two of the top three NL MVP finalists is absurd.
Most people say the Dodgers look like clear World Series favorites.
But, Jeff Passan thinks we should slow down on anointing them the next great team.
Passan mentioned in a tweet that over the past 10 years, 14 different teams have made the World Series and nine have won.
The parity in baseball, especially playoff baseball, is unlike any other sport.
So while the Dodgers may have the best roster on paper, they still need to play the games.
In the last 10 years, 14 MLB teams have made the World Series and nine have won. In the last 25 years, 20 have made it and 16 have won. Over both spans, that’s more different winners than the NFL, NBA and NHL.

Passan mentioned a few major-market teams that flopped last season.
This goes to show spending a lot of money does not result in wins.
One small-market team that is consistently successful is the Tampa Bay Rays.
They spend almost no money on players but they do a great job developing their own from the minor leagues.
Even though the Dodgers have dominated the offseason so far, some very good players are available.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the offseason plays out.
The Dodgers will enter next season as the World Series favorite.
But, let’s have the team take the field before we start handing them the trophy.
