The emergence of podcasts and social media has connected fans to athletes in a way that has never been possible.

Podcasts, in particular, are an excellent way for former or current players to break down certain situations, allowing fans a peek behind the curtain.

Former defensive great J.J. Watt proved this in a conversation with Kevin Clark on the “This is Football” podcast.

Watt was asked if he could have a do-over of any play in his career, and after just a few seconds of thought, he had his answer.

There was a specific play against Tony Romo that Watt re-hashed, one he wishes had a different outcome.

After breaking through Tyron Smith and the Cowboys offensive line, Watt said, “I was literally trying to kill Tony Romo. I’ve told this to his face, I was trying to break his back. That was the goal.”

What play does @JJWatt want back? When he beat Tyron Smith and went right at Romo.

Watt did his best to get to Romo, but as he remembers it, Romo “felt his presence” and found a way out of a potential sack.

This is just one of many examples of stories that NFL players can tell now that they have a medium to do so.

There are certainly chances for former athletes to tell stories like this in their broadcasting jobs, but they are often unable to go into full details due to time constraints or network restrictions.

Regardless of where he told it, Watt seemed excited to talk about this story, wishing he had a chance to redo this play.
