The Arizona Cardinals aren’t exactly what one would consider a powerhouse or even a contending team right now.
They’re coming off winning just four games last season, and while getting Kyler Murray back to start the year is obviously a significant improvement, they’re still the worst team in their division by a significant margin.
The Cardinals had a solid draft, headlined by stellar rookie WR Marvin Harrison Jr.
Still, it takes more than just that to turn the page in the toughest and most competitive football league on Earth.
Nonetheless, RB James Conner doesn’t want the rest of the league sleeping on the new-look Cardinals.
Talking after practice, the former Pittsburgh Steelers running back talked about embracing a new leadership role, adding that he fully believes in this team’s potential to make a run:
“I want to turn things around out here. We have a great football team, we’re coached really well, so we want that to reflect on our record and our play. I want to speak up,” Conner said.
Conner believes they’re a good team and is looking forward to turning things around and making their record show that.
Granted, they were more competitive than you could tell from their final record, and while Jonathan Gannon drew some criticism for his coaching and people skills in his first campaign with the team, he might be able to do something special with that defense if given enough time.
Also, once again, a lot will hang on whether Kyler Murray can step up and not only stay on the field and be consistent but also be the leader this team’s offense has lacked since Larry Fitzgerald retired, which has always been a big knock on the former No. 1 pick.
